Water Babies

Today the girls went swimming for the first time! What an experience. The "small" swim diaper was a little big but the girls looked as cute as ever in their matching neon swimsuits! Thanks to the warm temperatures of the Kiwanis Leisure Pool, the girls made an easy transition into the water. Molly was mostly stunned and Abigail began to fuss at first. A few minutes into the water both girls looked a little bewildered but began to enjoy themselves. A few dunks under the water and the girls were settled in. We almost had a few kicks and splashes and the girls really started to lay back into the water and enjoyed being pulled around. Loved the Family Change room so Shawn and I could get the girls ready together! Yet another Turkette adventure in the books.

We will definitely be returning for Toddler Time or Leisure Swim time!! Kiwanis Leisure Pool Times

And then it happened!

Abigail was on her back laying on her blanket hanging out while I fed Molly. I looked down at Abigail and wouldn't you believe it, she was on her tummy! Wow!! So proud of our little girl, another talent! :-)

Weekend Walking Warriors!

Wonderful weather on the weekend can only mean one thing, stroller time!! The past two days have been amazing spring weather. Each morning began with Shawn and I waking to hear the girls talking away in their cribs! (we believe to one another, haha) After feeding the girls and having a quick breakfast, we load the girls up in the stroller and head out into the neighbourhood. Both days we chose to walk to Starbucks for a tea and coffee. Once we meandered back to our street on Saturday we met our neighbour Brock and his twin daughters Olivia and Alexandra. The girls are a year and a month older than our girls! Our first question when we met him was "Does it get any easier???" It was awesome to see where our girls will be in the future.

Even though the girls are sitting up right in their stroller now, we caught them falling asleep!

On Sunday after returning to our neighbourhood we ran into Brock and his daughters again but this time with his wife and another neighbourhood family. The girls were super excited to meet some new friends! Plans are already in the works for a summer street party!

Looking forward to more sunny days and long walks!

More Fun for Babies or Parents?

The Jolly Jumper!! Quite possibly the funniest contraption I've put Molly and Abigail in yet! Not only is it hilarious to see them hang from our kitchen doorway, their faces are priceless as they attempt to figure out what they can do in an upright position.

Attempt #1 resulted in both girls basically hanging limp and smiling at us. Molly eventually began some slight knee bends and kicking her feet similar to an Irish Dancer. Attempt #2 was much more entertaining. As the girls hung side-by-side, Molly began jumping and twisting around. Abigail burst into a fit of giggles every time Molly turned or bounced around. While the girls may be enjoying exercising their legs and roaming this new territory of the house, my parents, Shawn and I are having quite the laugh watching them explore!

Jump up, jump up and get down!

Play Time: Let the fun begin!

At four months old, Molly and Abigail have reached a fun age where they are really starting to interact with us and their environment. Although they still don't interact a lot with each other, we've moved way beyond just smiling!

One of the first activities the girls and I did together was attend Baby and Mommy Yoga! Yoga by Sarah offers these classes each week and our instructor Angela welcomed using one of the Turkettes as a demo baby so I could attend with both girls! We were joined by our cousins Kate and baby Sophie, so much fun!!
Exhausted after our first yoga class!

The girls are now busy playing in exersaucers, sitting in their Bumbo chairs and using their hands to hold toys! The best part of all these activities is that the girls are now LAUGHING! Other than cooing, this is quite possibly the best sound I have ever heard!

Practising being upright in our Go-Pod (Thanks Lori, Stef and the Arbours)

 Smiling in the Bumbo Chair

 Holding onto a toy

One of the greatest things about some of our toys is that they are hand-me-downs from our friends! What a great way to recycle toys! We plan on passing our toys on to our friends' future kids!

From Teacher to Mom: How my Itinerant Arts position is helping me now!!!

The past two school years I have found myself in a new teaching position as an Itinerant Arts Teacher. Feeling I am more a teacher of students than a teacher of subjects, I had a hard time embracing my new role without my school or students. My biggest challenge was taking my Intermediate-Senior teaching style and tweaking it to be able to teach K-8 Drama and Dance. The first time I taught Kindergarten and sang the "Form A Circle" song, I couldn't help but laugh, thinking if only my Intermediate Colleagues could see me now!!

However, as Molly and Abigail become more alert and looking for interaction, my time as an Itinerant Arts Teacher is definitely coming in handy! I was reminded of all the great nursery rhymes and learned some great new songs to sing and play with my girls.
We spend a lot of time posing for pictures in this gliding chair, but we also sit here and sing songs together (okay, I do all of the singing, but they smile along!) Song currently in our repertoire include:
  • I'm a Little Tea Pot
  • BINGO
  • Old McDonald Had a Farm (Molly's favourite)
  • Black Socks
  • Bubble Gum Song
  • 5 Little Ducks
  • Down By the Bay
Thanks to our friends Greg and Nic for the great Police onesies the girls are wearing above! Definitely one of our favourite onesies for the girls to wear!!!

Parenting Challenges I Never Thought Of

One of my first life lessons as a parent was the fact that my babies were a lot tougher than I gave them credit for. I spent the first few weeks very slowly and very gently doing things with the girls. Out of necessity I soon realized they could handle a lot more speedy diaper changes and weren't as fragile as I originally thought!

With that being said there are still TWO baby hygiene tasks that I am not fully confident and comfortable doing (my skill set is growing though!)

CUTTING THE TURKETTES' FINGER NAILS!!! This is never easy, never fun and it nearly broke my heart the first time I accidentally cut Abby's finger instead of her nail. Oh how she bled! Ever since then I only cut their nails when they've fallen asleep in the car seats after we've returned home from being out!

BATHING THE TURKETTES!! Slippery baby in a little baby tub is never enjoyable! I've finally gotten the hang of it, but yikes this was tricky the first two months. I actually watched a YouTube video on bathing your infant to make sure I was doing it right! LOL

Lots of Questions! Where are the Answers?

As a new Mom I had a TON of questions:
  •  To use a soother or not?
  • What type of baby bottle and nipple is best?
  • What type of formula is best?
  • What do I need to put on my baby registry? (and you do need to have one of these!)
Especially twin specific questions such as:
  • How do you get twins on similar schedule?
  • Should they share the same crib?
  • How to you comfort two crying babies?
  • How do you breast feed two babies at once?
I found the answers to these questions in a variety of places. First I turned to my friends, family and neighbour who recently had kids for advice. These amazing women served as my sounding board and a great place for me to get honest, trusted advice from people who knew me best! My friend Beth took me for a tour of Babies R Us and pointed out to me all the key baby gear items that she found useful as a new mom and also pointed out all the ridiculous items marketing strategies try and convince you to buy for your child's well being. This visit alone made building my baby register much easier! For the record I had two registries, one at Babies R Us and one at Sears. This gave my friends out of town more options and gave me exposure to more products.

POMBA was once again an amazing resources as these M.O.Ms (Mommy's of Multiples) had lived through what I was experiencing and had lots of great tips for me. Whenever I can, I try to attend their monthly meetings to network with other Moms and hear the great guest speakers they have. Plus, who couldn't use a few hours out at William's Coffee Pub!

Finally, there was four books I read to learn about becoming a Mom and pick up advice for raising twins. All four of these books offered me some invaluable information that I learned and applied with the Turkettes and it has really made a difference in my confidence and parenting skills.

They Can Smile! Okay, It's All Worth It!

The first 6 weeks were really tough. We kind of lived while sleepwalking through the daily routines. The girls spent all of their time filling diapers, sleeping, eating or crying. Just when I thought I'd had enough of this new life called parenting, Abigail smiled!! I spent tons of time positioning the girls on our living room chair and snapping pictures of them, but this time her eyes lit up, her dimples ran deep and a huge smile came out!!! JUST AWESOME!!

Since Uncle Jamie's birthday photo shot and Abigail's first smile caught on camera, there have been countless smiling faces! Parenting has become so much more rewarding now that my daughters can communicate their happiness!!

Some other favourite smiling faces caught on film include:

 Abigail now smiling when prompted....awesome!

Molly spitting out her soother to show off her smile.

Abigail posing with the Sesame Street Gang!

Abigail very happy about her "I love Daddy" PJs

Smiling at the same time!! Finally!!

Good times hanging out with my sista!

Daddy won't like this one, but the Turkettes look cute in their Chicago Blackhawks outfits! (Thanks Uncle Jamie)

The Evolution of Our Routine

Feeding on Demand or Scheduled Feedings? When I read about these terms during my baby reading, I was convinced there was no way I would be feeding on demand. Like so many other aspects of my life I figured I would get this part organized and on a schedule; the Turkettes thought differently! Before I knew it, they were calling the shots!

Feeding Routine #1:
I'm using the term "routine" loosely here. I had no idea what I was doing and I certainly had no idea when the girls were going to feed next! The girls breast fed, followed by a supplementation of formula. This was recommended by the pediatrician at the hospital since the girls lost so much weight and we stuck to this plan. I wasn't really sure how long to breast feed for or how much formula to give them to top them up, so we just sort of winged it! Due to their birth weight the girls had to eat every 3 hours, and not 3 hours from when they finished eating last, 3 hours from when they started feeding. Throughout the night we would set our alarm and wake up from a dead sleep to feed the girls, unless their crying woke us up sooner! The only thing that made this stage manageable was knowing that when we were woken up at 4am for a feeding we could watch Team Canada compete in the World Juniors!!

Feeding Routine #2:
To save time and shorten the feeding length, tandem breast feeding. Yes, that means feeding breast feeding two babies at one time.
Love these little feet!
While only possible if I had help to "set up", this routine definitely helped Shawn and I get a bit more sleep. The girls were still feeding every 2.5-3 hours but we started to try to stretch it out a little longer in the middle of the night.

Feeding Routine #3
Girls feeding every 3 hours during the day, then after the 7pm feeding we try to stretch the next feeding until around 11pm. At this point we would do a "top up" feeding and give the girls more formula then usual in an attempt to stretch out our sleep. At this point the girls had gained back birth weight so we could let them wake us up to feed in the middle of the night and no longer set our alarm! Alleluia!

Current Routine
Whenever the girls wake up in the morning, usually we hear them cooing in their cribs (yes plural, they now sleep in their own crib). I open their blinds, say good morning to the girls then move Abigail over in her crib to make room for Molly to join her. I then sing some good morning songs to the girls and talk to them! Then while their bottles warm I drink a cup of tea while chatting with them in their crib. From this feeding on, we feed the girls every 3 hours during the day. We then do the "top up" feeding at the end of the day and the girls now sleep a good 5-6 hours straight. (We almost feel human again) The best part about our current routine is that we now can totally read the clues our girls are giving us; we can tell when they are hungry, we can tell when they are getting tired and when they are fussy, we know to always check their diaper as our first line of attack!!

Best Advice I Got:
They sleep = You sleep

Twin Tips:
In the beginning, one down, both down!

The age-old and popular saying "Never wake a sleeping baby" doesn't apply to twins. In order to get their sleeping and eating schedules synchronized, there will be times when you simply have to wake one to do so.

1st Christmas

Christmas Day and the Turkettes are 2 weeks old. Spoiled rotten and they don't even know it!!

Two weeks old and they already own so much stuff!!

I am a huge fan of Christmas and love having a Christmas Tree that is full of personal, meaningful ornaments. I love decorating the tree every year and finding all of the ornaments that I've collected over the years from friends, family, students and from trips we've been on. Shawn and I began a tradition of bringing home a Christmas tree ornament as a souvenier from our vacations. We were hoping this would be a great way to make our future Christmas trees a walk down memory lane! Thanks to all of our friends and family who gave the girls Christmas ornaments for their 1st Christmas. They are all so unique; one with their name, one for twins, one I can put their picture in, one that was pink, one that I put their birth date, weight and length on. It's going to be a great personal and meaningful addition to our future Christmas tree. I think it's an awesome gift for new baby at Christmas time!

Home Sweet Home

Saturday, December 15th...the day the girls came home. With great excitement and trepidation we ventured home with Abigail and Molly driving about 40km/hr! It was great to finally be home, but we our first thoughts were, "now what?"
The question we were most frequently asked after we returned home was "where do they sleep?"

The girls sleep together, in their room, in the same crib all swaddled up (a new talent I picked up at the hospital) side by side. The first few nights we slept with their bedroom door open and the baby monitor on. Although I thought I wouldn't sleep a wink since the girls were feeding every 2.5-3 hours around the clock, the second my head hit the pillow I would fall right asleep. I don't recall my bed ever being as comfortable as it was during the first week home from the hospital. After a few days the monitor was off and their bedroom door was ajar. It became much easier to fall asleep knowing by the time we finished feeding the girls we would only be getting 1-2 hours of sleep.

Slowly but surely as the days past, Shawn and I got the girls into more and more of a routine. We tracked when they fed, how much they ate, what type of diapers they had....it seemed tedious at first but tracking helped us newbie parents determine if the girls were eating enough. (I think like all new parents this was a big concern for us)

One side effect of all the feedings was all the diapers!!! Thank you City of St. Catharines for allowing parents with two or more children in diapers to put out an extra bag of garbage (free of charge), as long as it's all diapers. Now each week I feel sorry for my garbage man as he hauls away a big bag of Diaper Genie diaper sausages. The Diaper Genie has to be one of the BEST baby gear inventions. It makes disposing of 16-20 diapers a day not so smelly! Shawn and I laugh when we recall how before the girls arrived we were unsure about our skill level of changing diapers...let's just say we've had a lot of practice. :-)

That's a lot of diapers!!!

Our Time at the General

This post needs to start off with a HUGE Thank You to the amazing nurses that helped us during our five day stay at the hospital. We were so overwhelmed by our new responsibility and the nursing staff did an amazing job of making sure we knew what we were doing and felt confident doing it before we left the hospital. From making sure Shawn had somewhere to sleep when he stayed with me every day and night (God bless him!) to taking the girls one night to the nursing station so Shawn and I could get some much needed sleep, our experience at the General was fantastic!

Packing for the Hospital:
We packed a bag for the girls filled with baby necessities such as diapers, wipes, onesies and sleepers. Then we packed a bag for us with all the essentials for staying away from home! Having the two different bags made finding and organizing things so much easier. I also brought my breast pump to the hospital so I could talk to the lactation consultant about how to use it. Many thanks to my university gal pal Jenn for giving me her breast pump. I used a Medela Swing and found it very easy to use.

The best things I packed: My Contigo thermos, great for water and keeping my tea warm. It was the best thing because it doesn't leak and I could stay in my resting position in bed and still grab a drink. Nursing tank tops were another great packing item which allowed me to be comfortable while breast feeding for the first few times.

What I wish we knew ahead of time.....how hard it is to get the meconium (dark, tar-like poo) off a newborn's bum! A few days after they were born, we ran into a couple we met at our Prenatal Class, who told us they put vaseline on their baby's bottom to make it easier to get this poo off!! If you're expecting...you need to add vaseline to your hospital bag!!!

The best thing about those many days in the hospital were the countless number of friends and family that came to visit us and the girls! If you're going to visit new parents at the hospital, do what many of our visitors did and bring the parents food!! Hospital food can only be tolerated for so long and gifts or presents just add to the amount of packing and carrying to do when it's time to leave the hospital! We really appreciated receiving the gifts once we were home and everyone came to visit the girls!

Here is a few pictures of all the people who came to visit us at the hospital!

The Day Life Changed Forever!

Attempting to fall asleep on Monday, December 10th, 2012 reminded me of being a kid and trying to fall asleep on Christmas Eve, oh the anticipation was great! Imagine what it is like trying to sleep when you know the very next morning you are going to become the parents of twin girls! Our arrival at the now closed St. Catharines General Hospital at 6:30am was not without humour. The Admitting Nurse asked for the reason for our visit; "to become parents" I proudly announced! What followed in the next few hours was the most wonderful birth of my daughters I could have ever imagined! Due to "Baby B" being in the breech position, I had a scheduled C-Section. The absolute best thing about this scenario was that my best friend, Jen Frendo, a family physician in Niagara was going to help deliver my babies!

Finally at 8:31am and 8:33am our little girls were born!

Life Leading Up to the Turkettes!

Life before the Turkettes was busy! Teaching, sports, traveling...all my husband Shawn and I had was time! Time to do whatever we wanted! Then in April of 2012 we found out we were pregnant and the excitement began. We announced the great news to our parents on Mother's Day! The weeks following we shared the news with a few good friends, including a few jokes with our friend Lori that Shawn believed I was so efficient and good at multi-tasking that I was having twins. Imagine our surprise when our ultrasound results showed TWO BABIES! Baby A and Baby B had entered our world and we were shocked.

The purpose of the Turkette Blog is to allow our friends and family to follow our journey with the Turkettes and to allow other twin parents to learn from our experiences!

After announcing our twin pregnancy to our family and friends we were overwhelmed by all the love and support we received! After reading "Juggling Twins: The Best Tips, Tricks, and Strategies From Pregnancy to the Toddler Years" by Meghan Regan-Loomis (a great book for future twin parents, give to be by another M.O.M...Mommy of Multiples) One of the suggestions in her book was to have a Diaper Party! Not only did we have a HUGE diaper party, but we also revealed the gender of the Turkettes through a cake cutting reveal! Thanks to our good friend Paul Federici's girlfriend Fab for making some awesome cakes!

The diaper party was one of the more brilliant pre-baby ideas we had. We turned our 10th annual Labour Day Weekend Party from "Bring a Chair and Something to Share" into "Bring a Chair and some diapers". Thanks to the generosity of our friends and family, we were stocked with thousands (not kidding) of diapers from Preemie to Size 5!

Another great pre-baby idea we had was getting involved with POMBA Niagara. The Parents of Multiple Births Association of Niagara is an awesome network of parents of multiples that offered us many resources and advice for our countless questions!! (http://www.nrpomba.com/)

Finally we took many pictures of my ever growing belly!! 38 weeks and 65lbs later, I was bursting and it was time for the Turkettes to arrive!!
